High GHG savings from commercial ButaNexT process expected

Deliverable 6.2 presents an initial mass and energy balance of the Butanext biobutanol production process at a projected commercial scale, and the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the fuel. The work has recently been completed by E4tech, and the summary report is now available in our publications section.


The mass and energy balance was put together in collaboration with the members of the Butanext consortium, and models the biobutanol production process at a projected commercial scale of 50,000 tonnes/year of biobutanol production.


Based on the plant mass and energy balance an assessment of the greenhouse gas emissions of the biobutanol was carried out.


The results indicate that biobutanol produced through the Butanext production process could have significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions than fossil fuels, and be competitive with first generation biofuels.


Future experimental work by the Butanext consortium will help make the modelling more accurate, and revised greenhouse gas emissions and energy balances will be included in a later deliverable.
